What Makes a Product Sustainable? The 7 Factors That Matter

February 15, 2026 6 min read
Sustainability isn't a single quality — it's the intersection of seven measurable factors that shape a product's total environmental impact.

1. Materials

Recycled, natural or renewable inputs (organic cotton, bamboo, cork, hemp) outperform virgin petrochemical plastics and conventionally grown fibres.

2. Manufacturing

Ethical labour, energy-efficient factories and audited working conditions. Look for B Corp or SA8000.

3. Packaging

Minimal, plastic-free, recyclable or compostable. A great product in bad packaging still has a large footprint.

4. Shipping

Local sourcing beats long-haul air freight every time. Sea freight is dramatically better than air.

5. Recyclability

Can the product be recycled at end-of-life? Multi-material items (electronics, coated paper) are the hardest.

6. Certifications

Third-party verification you can look up: GOTS, USDA Organic, Fair Trade, FSC, Rainforest Alliance, B Corp.

7. Carbon footprint

The overall CO₂ impact across the product's lifecycle. Look for published lifecycle assessments.
