How Does a Sustainability Score Work?

February 5, 2026 5 min read
A sustainability score compresses dozens of environmental signals into one 0-100 number. Done well, it lets you compare wildly different products on the same scale.

The 7 measurable dimensions

Ecowallet scores carbon footprint, packaging, materials, recyclability, manufacturing, shipping and certifications — each on 0-100. The overall score is a weighted average with an explicit confidence rating.

How AI reasons over the data

Our AI (Claude Sonnet 4.6) reads the product name, brand website, merchant page and declared certifications. It then reasons metric-by-metric, citing specific evidence, and outputs structured JSON that we publish transparently.

What the score cannot tell you

A score is a summary. It cannot capture personal values (e.g., you may prioritise animal welfare over carbon), nor can it be more accurate than the public evidence available. That's why we publish the sources and reasoning behind every score.
